Abstract:

Background and Aim: The purpose of the study was isolation and characterization of the oral Actinomyces species believed to be the cause of the periapical ABSCESSes.Methods and Materials: This epidemiological study was carried out on 32 patients with DENTO-ALVEOLAR ABSCESSes, which have been referred to the Faculty of Dentistry, Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The specimens were collected during a period of 7 month, using aspiration method in the anaerobic condition.Samples were aseptically transferred to the individual screw bijoux bottles containing 1ml Career's Blair medium and sent to the laboratory within the next 30 minutes. Sample taking was performed from patients who had submandibular chronic DENTO-ALVEOLAR ABSCESSes with no infectious diseases. An appropriate questionnaire was filled in for each case. Results: 32 specimens taken and one species of Actinomyces naeslundii were isolated from a patient with dentoALVEOLAR ABSCESS. Of the 32 patients with DENTO- ALVEOLAR ABSCESSes, aged between 14-47 years, 19 were male (59.4 %) and 13 were female (40.6 %). The highest incidence of the DENTO-ALVEOLAR ABSCESS (25 %) was seen in the group aged 31-35 with the lowest incidence (6.3 %) was seen in the group aged 15-19years. The cause of the DENTO-ALVEOLAR ABSCESSes was found to be as follows: nineteen patients (59.4 %) with dental carries, seven patients (21.9 %) with a dental extraction and six patients (18.8 %) with d endodontic treatment. Conclusion: Results suggest that Actinomyces species may contribute to the etiology of the DENTO-ALVEOLAR ABSCESSes.

Introduction: The most important function of speech is communication and any disorder in speech undoubtedly affects communication with other people. Speech disorders have a significant effect on social development of human beings. This study was undertaken to evaluate the relative incidence of speech disorders in sagittal DENTO-ALVEOLAR disorders.Materials and methods: In this descriptive analytical study 95 patients referring to the Orthodontics Department of Khorasgan Dental School in spring 2008, who met the inclusion criteria (subjects with one of the Angle’s 3 classes of malocclusion based on preliminary evaluations, no history of orthodontic treatment and with no other problems such as mental retardation or cleft palate) were randomly selected and underwent dentofacial examinations. A speech therapist evaluated the subjects’ speech disorders via phonetic test and colloquial speech. Data were analyzed with chi-squared test using SPSS 16 (a=0.05).Results: Chi-squared test did not reveal any significant relationship between speech disorders and Angle’s malocclusion (p value=0.07). The group with dentofacial disorder and the group without it were matched in relation to sex (p value=0.092) and age (p value=0.543). In addition, of all the consonants the most common disorder was related to abrasive consonants and the speech disorders were not evenly distributed among all the consonants (p value<0.001).Conclusion: The results showed no significant relationship between speech disorders Angle’s malocclusion. The most frequent disorder was related to abrasive consonants.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Mesenchymal tumor of the GASTROINTESTINAL tract comprises a diverse group of neoplasms which occurs in adults. With recognition of immunohistochemical profile in recent years, GASTROINTESTINAL stromal tumor (GIST) has been grouped separately from other sarcomas. No therapeutic modality except. Surgey has ever demonstrated definitive evidence of clinical benefit in GIST. These tumors occur most commonly in the stomach, followed by small intestine, and are rare in the colon and rectum and extremely rare in the esophagus. GIST also arises rarely in the omentum, mesentery and peritoneum.CASE: A 69-year-old male was admitted to surgical ward with clinical and CT scan findings of large, movable abdominal mass behind the stomach with probable origin from the pancreas. Explorative laparatomy revealed an 18 x 16 cm mass in lesser omentum. Pathological and immunohistochemical techniques revealed malignant GIST.CONCLUSION: GASTROINTESTINAL stromal tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the abdominal mass.

Abstract:

Tricho– dento– osseous (TDO) syndrome is a multisystem congenital disorder that is known by bone, skin, and hair abnormalities. Primitive studies show different varieties of manifestations related to this disorder, which involve sclerotic bones, nail involvement, enamel hypoplasia, mandibular prognathism, and taurodontism. Although exploring different TDO cases revealed genetic mutations in all of them, they have many variations in phenotypic view. In this study, we report a case whose primary diagnosis was alopecia and came for extraction of her third molars, but after clinical and radiographic examination, it was found that the cause of her disease was something different.

Abstract:

Background and Objectives: Brain ABSCESS remains a potentially fatal central nervous system (CNS) disease, especially in developing countries. Anaerobic ABSCESS is difficult to diagnose because of cumbersome procedures associated with the isolation of anaerobes.Materials and Methods: This is a hospital-based retrospective microbiological analysis of 430 brain ABSCESS materials (purulent aspirates and/or tissue), for anaerobic organisms, that were received between 1987-2014, by the Microbiology Laboratory in our Institute. Results: Culture showed growth of bacteria 116.430 (27%) of the cases of which anaerobes were isolated in 48.116 (41.1%) of the cases. Peptostreptococcus (51.4%), was the predominant organism isolated in four cases followed by Bacteroides and Peptococcus species. Conclusion: Early diagnosis and detection of these organisms would help in the appropriate management of these patients.

Abstract:

Introduction: Panoramic view as a routine dental radiograph has an important role in diagnosis of other facial abnormalities accompanied with DENTO- ALVEOLAR structures. In this case presentation, we discuss this subject and also the efficacy of cone-beam computed tomography in localization of foreign body in complex anatomy of nasal cavity.
